IIT Bombay Students Win Inter-IIT Challenge, Map Lunar Chemistry Using Chandrayaan-2 Data

IIT Bombay students have emerged victorious in a national inter-college challenge, impressing ISRO scientists with their groundbreaking analysis of Chandrayaan-2 data. Their work has now been shared with the global scientific community.

Every year, students from India’s premier IITs compete at the Inter-IIT Tech Meet, showcasing their skills in science, technology, and innovation. This year, ISRO’s U. R. Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) posed a special challenge: map the Moon’s surface chemistry using Chandrayaan-2 data. The IIT Bombay team’s exceptional analysis and innovative approach secured them the top spot among competing teams. Their efforts produced detailed maps of the Moon’s geochemistry and was submitted to an international research journal and is now accessible online for researchers worldwide.

IIT Bombay Student Teams Excel on the Global Motorsport Stage

IIT Bombay Racing made its mark on the global motorsport stage through two remarkable events this year, with the Driverless and Electric Vehicle (EV) teams showcasing cutting-edge technology, skill, and innovation. Both teams represented India with distinction at international competitions, achieving historic milestones and earning top honours in their respective categories.

IIT Bombay Racing Driverless, the autonomous arm of IIT Bombay Racing, achieved a landmark performance, proudly putting India on the global map in autonomous motorsport.

At the renowned Formula Student AI 2025 at Silverstone Circuit, UK, the team claimed an impressive 4th place overall among 25 international teams, marking the first time an Indian team completed a dynamic event in FS-AI history.

Key Highlights from the event include:

  • Trackdrive (Dynamic Event): 3rd Place – Completed 10 fully autonomous laps without hitting a single cone
  • Static Events: 3rd Place Overall
  • Business Plan Presentation: 3rd Place
  • Real World AI: 4th Place

 

Meanwhile, IIT Bombay Racing EV, with its newest electric race car, E14, proudly represented India at the Formula Student Netherlands 2025 competition, held at the historic TT Circuit Assen, Netherlands.

This remarkable achievement was made possible thanks to the strong support of IIT Bombay and its faculty, including the expert guidance of Prof. Sandeep Anand (Electrical Engineering), Prof. Archak Mittal (Civil Engineering), and several other faculty and Institute functionaries who mentored the team throughout their journey.
