Project

The rooftop solar panel initiative at IIT Bombay's new hostel complex (Project Evergreen) is a forward-looking step toward sustainability. This contribution has enabled the Institute to generate clean, renewable energy directly on campus. The initiative not only reduces dependency on conventional power sources but also significantly cuts down electricity costs and carbon emissions, aligning with global climate action goals.

Recognizing this lasting impact, the solar project has been named in honour of the Class of 1971, marking their enduring legacy.

Few initiatives in IIT Bombay’s history have reflected the power of alumni collaboration quite like Project Evergreen—a landmark effort bringing together vision, generosity, and a deep commitment to the student experience. This alumni-led, alumni-built, and alumni-delivered world-class hostel complex, supported by corporates and well-wishers, provides students with modern living spaces that enhance their campus experience. Three state-of-the-art hostels, H7, H8, and H21 (a dedicated women’s hostel), now add 848 hostel rooms with 1127 beds. Operational since July 2025, the hostels are home to students who are living, learning, debating, dreaming, and forming friendships that will last a lifetime.
