Project

The C1973 EV Powertrain Lab at IIT Bombay is a landmark initiative reflecting the Institute’s dedication to innovation, sustainability, and technological self-reliance. More than just a facility, the lab represents a strategic push aligned with the Government of India’s mission to reduce import dependence and build an indigenous EV design and manufacturing ecosystem.

As the world moves rapidly toward electric mobility, this lab positions IIT Bombay at the forefront—especially in the space of small electric vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers.

Outfitted with state-of-the-art infrastructure such as active dynamometers, battery characterization systems, motor prototyping tools, and next-gen electrical setups, the lab enables cutting-edge research in motors, inverters, controllers, and Battery Management Systems (BMS). It focuses on solutions tailored to India’s needs—like high-temperature durability, low maintenance, and affordable, local production.

Research themes include magnet-less motors, wide bandgap semiconductor inverters (GaN and SiC), integrated power electronics, and next-generation energy storage technologies.

The lab’s long-term vision is to evolve into a globally recognized R&D hub for EV powertrains in small vehicles and serve as a preferred industry innovation partner. It also aims to strengthen India’s technical workforce through internal and professional training programs.

The EV Powertrain Lab is a transformative step in making India a global leader in sustainable transportation, while honoring the legacy of IIT Bombay alumni and their contributions to nation-building.

Project

This initiative promotes impactful faculty research at IIT Bombay, especially among emerging academicians. The C1973 Faculty Awards for Research Excellence (FARE) aim to cultivate a vibrant and forward-looking research culture in disciplines like Engineering, Design, Basic Sciences, and Applied Sciences.

By supporting young researchers, the initiative encourages the creation of new knowledge and the development of applied technologies with relevance to both academia and industry.

From 2024 to 2033, the program will award 16 faculty members each year, one from each department, with an annual award of approximately ₹1 Lakh. Applications are submitted yearly, and recipients are selected through a rigorous evaluation by sectional committees, with final decisions made by the Awards Committee for Excellence in Research (ACER), appointed by department heads or chairs.

This award highlights the academic community’s enthusiasm for research excellence and the Class of 1973’s enduring dedication to fostering innovation and supporting India’s next generation of scholars and industrial innovators.
