Project

HEARTS ’74 (Habitat for Everyone: Affordable, Resilient, Transformative, and Sustainable) is an initiative aimed at creating affordable, resilient, transformative, and sustainable rural housing for all.

The objective of HEARTS '74 is to establish a structured approach for providing housing to those in rural India who cannot independently afford one. The initiative seeks to develop scalable housing prototypes, tested across diverse climates and seasons—either through a single adaptable design or through region-specific models tailored to geographical and climatic diversity.

HEARTS '74 is envisioned as a centre for incremental development, driven by ongoing research, field testing in varied site conditions, and continuous cost optimization. The proposed homes will feature essentials like a kitchen, toilet, bathing area, and allow for future expansion, all within a 30 to 45 square meter multipurpose carpet area. Eco-friendly elements like solar panels, smokeless chulhas, and systems for rainwater harvesting and sanitation are integral to the plan.

The project also emphasizes low-carbon construction by embedding sustainable practices into its design and building processes. A key innovation lies in engaging the beneficiaries themselves in the construction, contributing to their skill development and livelihood enhancement. The project is structured to roll out in a three-phased implementation model.

Project

Few initiatives in IIT Bombay’s history have reflected the power of alumni collaboration quite like Project Evergreen—a landmark effort bringing together vision, generosity, and a deep commitment to the student experience. This alumni-led, alumni-built, and alumni-delivered world-class hostel complex, supported by corporates and well-wishers, provides students with modern living spaces that enhance their campus experience. Three state-of-the-art hostels, H7, H8, and H21 (a dedicated women’s hostel), now add 848 hostel rooms with 1127 beds. Operational since July 2025, the hostels are home to students who are living, learning, debating, dreaming, and forming friendships that will last a lifetime.
