RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT

Water-Pollutant Detecting Device: Arotrack

IIT Bombay Team Develops Affordable, Portable Water-Pollutant Detecting Device: Arotrack

The device uses a protein-based biosensor to detect harmful pollutants like phenol and benzene from the water sample.

In a significant development for sustainable environmental management, scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) have introduced an economical and portable device to accurately detect harmful pollutants such as phenol or benzene in water. The device, named AroTrack, can be a game-changer given the increasing water pollution due to industrialisation, urbanisation, and unregulated effluent discharge.

When access to safe drinking water is shrinking, pollution of the remaining freshwater bodies is a serious concern. In cities worldwide, untreated industrial effluents are often discharged into the rivers, bringing in hazardous pollutants like phenol, benzene, and xylenols.

From the Dean's Desk December-2024

Dear Fellow Alumnus,

As 2024 comes to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on a year filled with growth, connections, and milestones. It has been a year of inspiring collaborations, heartfelt reunions, and significant progress, all thanks to the continued support of our alumni community.

Let me share some exciting updates from IIT Bombay and to thank you for being such an integral part of our journey.

Our team from IIT Bombay has just returned from an enriching Roadshow across the United States, where we had the distinct pleasure of meeting many of you in person. Between November 16-24, we travelled to New York, Dallas, Austin, Portland, and San Francisco, and reconnected with alumni whose excitement and hospitality were indeed very heartwarming, and their accomplishments continue to inspire and contribute to the legacy of our beloved Institute. It was a truly fulfilling experience to hear your stories, exchange ideas, and witness firsthand the deep, lasting impact IIT Bombay has had on your personal and professional lives. We will have more for you on our US Roadshow in our January 2025 newsletter.

We are also excited to share some significant milestones. First, our collaboration with Autodesk, a leader in design and manufacturing, aims to equip the next generation of engineers and designers with cutting-edge skills to thrive in the evolving Design and Make industries. We’re also delighted to announce a significant collaboration with Sinclair Inc. to advance technology and standards in wireless broadcast services. It’s a major step forward for IIT Bombay’s role in driving innovation, and we’re excited about the impact it will have both in India and globally. You can read about both of these partnerships in our Corporate Collaboration section.

Additionally, I am pleased to announce that Bhukhanvala Industries, led by our own alumnus Niraj Bhukhanwala, has generously established the Bhukhanwala Brothers Fellowship at IIT Bombay. On behalf of the entire IIT Bombay community, I extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Bhukhanwala for his invaluable contribution to the growth of our Institute and the advancement of India’s technological progress. You can get more details on the Fellowship in the Alumni Giving section of the newsletter.

We also celebrated ‘Alumination 2024: Noren of Nostalgia,’ our flagship alumni fest organised by the Student Alumni Relations Cell (SARC) that bridges the gap between past and present. We are thankful to all of our alumni who participated in the event, offered invaluable guidance to current students, and inspired the next generation through sessions, workshops, and cultural programs. IIT Bombay is truly grateful for the crucial role alumni play in fostering this meaningful connection. A Special Report on Alumination 2024 is featured in the newsletter, and I encourage you to relive the event through its highlights.

As always, we have all our regular coverage of campus-related activities in the newsletter.

As we wrap up an eventful year, I want to express my deepest gratitude to all of you for your continued support. Whether through your time, expertise, or philanthropic contributions, you are an integral part of IIT Bombay’s success. The bonds we share are a testament to IIT Bombay’s ethos of empowerment, and we look forward to building even stronger ties as we move forward.

We wish you and your loved ones a joyful and prosperous New Year. May 2025 bring new opportunities for happiness, growth, collaboration, and fulfilment.

Warm regards,
