IIT Bombay Scholars Shine at the Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Awards 2023
IIT Bombay is proud to announce that three of its scholars have been honoured with the prestigious Gandhian Young Technological Innovation (GYTI) Award 2023 for their groundbreaking contributions to science and technology.
Roshan Keshari Dr. Tathagata Pal Dr. Najmul Haque Barbhuiya
PhD scholar Mr. Roshan Keshari from the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering received the GYTI Appreciation Award for his pioneering work titled “Phytonanogel Shield: Precision Care for Psoriasis Patients.” Under the mentorship of Professors Rohit Srivastava and Shamik Sen, Mr. Keshari developed this innovative solution, which promises to transform the care of individuals suffering from psoriasis, merging cutting-edge technology with healthcare to enhance patients’ quality of life. His recognition is a testament to the high-impact research being conducted at IIT Bombay.
Alongside Roshan, Dr. Tathagata Pal, a former PhD student from the same department, was also honoured with the GYTI Appreciation Award. Under the guidance of Prof. Soumyo Mukherji, Dr. Pal developed a “Colorimetric Chemosensor for Rapid Detection of Fluoroquinolone Load in Environmental Water Bodies, Urine, and Counterfeit Drug Testing.” His work addresses critical health and environmental challenges by providing a rapid, effective method for detecting harmful chemicals in water bodies, human waste, and counterfeit medications, demonstrating the potential of technology to safeguard public health.
The third recipient of the award is Dr. Najmul Haque Barbhuiya who is currently a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Environmental Science and Engineering Department. Dr. Barbhuiya who is supervised by Prof. Swatantra P. Singh was bestowed the award for his project titled “Persulfate enhanced ciprofloxacin removal from water by laser-induced graphene-based electroconductive ultrafiltration membrane.”
These accolades not only celebrate the brilliance and dedication of Mr. Keshari, Dr. Pal and Dr. Barbhuiya but also underscore IIT Bombay’s role in nurturing innovative research that tackles real-world challenges. IIT Bombay Rocket Team Soars to New Heights at Spaceport America Cup 2024
The IIT Bombay Rocket Team, a dedicated group of rocketry enthusiasts, has once again proven its prowess on the global stage. Each year, they design and build a new rocket from the ground up, with their sights set on the prestigious Spaceport America Cup in New Mexico, USA.
In their second appearance at the 2024 Spaceport America Cup, the team’s rocket, Agastya, competed in the COTS category and secured an impressive 2nd place nationally and 35th overall. This standing doubled their performance from last year. But beyond their international success, the team has also claimed significant victories at national competitions, solidifying their position as one of India’s top rocketry teams.
Looking ahead, the team is preparing for a bold transition to the Student Researched and Developed (SRAD) category. With plans to develop their own indigenous motors, their goal is to take a major step toward self-reliance and innovation. Building on the legacy of their first rocket, Adyant, the team is ready to push the boundaries of rocket design even further.
The team expressed their heartfelt gratitude to IIT Bombay for the essential resources and opportunities that have made their achievements possible. They were also grateful to their mentors, Prof. Neeraj Kumbhakarna and Prof. Nagendra Kumar, for their invaluable guidance and unwavering support.

Techfest in Mexico: Empowering Minds, Shaping Futures
IIT Bombay is excited to announce the successful completion of its first-ever International Zonal round of Techfest, hosted in Mexico. The Techfest team travelled to this vibrant location to organize a prestigious event that brought together some of the brightest young minds to showcase their skills in technology and innovation.
This milestone not only highlights IIT Bombay’s global reach but also reinforces its unwavering commitment to fostering innovation and excellence.
More international zonals are planned for the future even as the 28th edition of Techfest is set to take place from December 17-19. This year features a forward-thinking theme focused on Sustainability and Artificial Intelligence and the team hopes to promote technological advancement and social harmony for a better tomorrow.
Through initiatives like Techfest, IIT Bombay continues to support and empower its student community, providing them with platforms to explore, innovate, and connect on a global scale. The Institute is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of leaders and visionaries, ensuring they have the resources and opportunities to make a meaningful impact in an ever-evolving world.
IIT Bombay Shines at the Inter-IIT Aquatics Meet 2024
IIT Bombay proudly showcased its prowess at the five-day Inter-IIT Aquatics Meet 2024, held at IIT Indore from October 1 to 5. The team secured the Best Player Award and clinched First Runner-Up in the water polo event, and in the overall Men’s category, IIT Bombay made impressive strides, moving from 9th position last year to 4th this year.
Individual accolades included Suyash Bhandare, who earned the Fastest Swimmer prize, and Saatwik Patnayak, named the Best Water Polo Player of the meet.
Around 229 athletes across 17 IITs, including 60 female participants, participated in the event, highlighting a vibrant competitive spirit. A total of 49 events that were held featured disciplines such as freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly, backstroke, and water polo matches. The event serves as a precursor to the 57th Inter IIT Sports Meet, which will be co-hosted by IIT Indore and IIT Kanpur from December 10 to 17, 2024.
IIT Bombay’s achievements at this meet not only reflect the talent and dedication of its athletes but also set a promising tone for future competitions. These successes highlight the Institute’s commitment to a holistic education that transcends science and engineering, fostering leadership, teamwork, and resilience.
