From the Dean's Desk August-2024

Dear Fellow Alumnus,

As we reflect on the events of July, it gives me immense pleasure to highlight the significant milestones and outstanding achievements that have defined this transformative month at IIT Bombay. From groundbreaking initiatives like the MakerSpace Conclave 2024 to the inspiring culmination of the Invention Factory, our community has once again demonstrated unparalleled innovation and commitment to excellence. These achievements not only reinforce our position as a leader in education and research but also underscore our dedication to shaping the future of technology and fostering global impact. I look forward to sharing more updates and celebrating continued successes with you.

But first, I want to talk about the Faculty Alumni Network – Distinguished Alumni Meeting (FAN DA Meeting 2024) at Stanford University that I had the pleasure of attending, alongside fellow representatives from IIT Bombay. As an alumnus of IIT Bombay myself, the FAN-DA Meets are particularly nostalgic (I had the privilege of attending the inaugural one held in 2003 at SFO) and meaningful and evoke a profound sense of connection and pride in our shared journey. It provides us with a wonderful opportunity to connect with our esteemed alumni, engage in vibrant discussions, and collaborate with an exceptional university, like Stanford. It was a fantastic platform to showcase the continued excellence and innovation that define our Institute on a global stage. Please look for a detailed writeup on FAN-DA Meet 2024 in a Special Report in the newsletter.

As I said above – we also hosted two crucial events in July. The MakerSpace Conclave 2024 brought together innovators from across India’s premier institutes to explore hands-on engineering solutions. Concurrently, the Invention Factory 2024 celebrated student ingenuity, culminating in a grand finale that crowned remarkable winners. These events underscore our commitment to fostering creativity, innovation, and practical skills among our students. Look for detailed Special Reports on both events in the newsletter.

As we navigate the emotional highs and lows of our IIT Bombay community, it is with deep sorrow that I have to inform you of the passing of two of our own in July 2024, Prof. Shankar Prasad Bhattacharyya and Dr. Hans C. Maru. Our thoughts are with their family as they cope with this profound loss. For a tribute to Prof. Bhattacharyya and Dr. Maru’s remarkable lives and contributions, please refer to the In Memoriam section in the Newsletter.

But as we honour the legacy of those who have left us, we are also uplifted by the triumphs of other members of the extended IITB family including IIT Bombay’s former Director, Mr. Ashok Misra, and IITB alumnus, Mr Pankaj Doshi. Their recent accolades serve as a testament to the enduring excellence and impact of IIT Bombay’s alumni network. Please look for their stories of success and innovation in the Legacy of Excellence and Alumni Accomplishment sections of the newsletter respectively.

We resume our Chai aur Samose Pe Charcha series this month. Join us as we explore the career trajectory of one of our very distinguished alumni, Mr. Suhas Narayan Mehta. His journey is truly an inspiration to all of us and I hope you enjoy reading about him as much as we enjoyed featuring him.

I am delighted to showcase the impactful collaborations and advancements emerging from IIT Bombay. A groundbreaking partnership between SINE at IIT Bombay and AMD India highlights our commitment to driving semiconductor innovation and supporting pioneering startups in the field. Please look for more in the Corporate Collaboration section of the newsletter.

We also have all of our other regular articles including Alumni Accolades, Faculty Accolades, Alumni News, Institute Highlights, Upcoming Events, and more in this month’s newsletter.

Before I sign off – I want to commend you on your steadfast commitment and dynamic involvement in our thriving IIT Bombay community. Your support fuels our pursuit of excellence and empowers us to push the boundaries of groundbreaking research and innovation. Together, let us continue to shape the future of education and research, and driving transformative change that resonates globally.

Sincerely,
