Prof. Devarat Shah is Jamieson Associate Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is also the founder of Celect – which was set-up in 2012, to commercialise his work on computing “social choice” from massive amounts of social data.

His research focuses on developing theoretically sound algorithmic solution for practical problems in communication networks and machine learning. This has led to advances in the theory of scheduling and graphical models. His work has made an impact on the practice including wireless networks, Internet routers and recommendation systems. His work on ‘social data processing’ was considered as one of the Top 50 contributions from Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) in the 50 years of its existence.

Prof. Shah received his B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in the year 1999 and was felicitated with the President’s of India Gold Medal, by the Institute. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University in 2004 and was a Post-doctoral Associate in Statistics at Stanford University in 2005. He joined MIT in the same year.

The Applied Probability Society of INFORMS awarded the Best Publication Award to Prof. Shah in 2012. He has also received the Erlang Prize from INFORMS in 2010 for his significant contributions to applied probability. He was recognized as the Rising Star from ACM Sigmetrics in 2008.

Prof. Shah is fond of playing squash.
