1980, Electrical Engineering

“The whole undertaking as batch leader was nostalgic and fun, leading to many memories and connections. Everyone was super supportive, and I was most touched by the appreciation of my classmates and the institute for what we did. I heartily encourage stepping up to lead such initiatives. The institute and its students will benefit tremendously but even more important it will be a memorable experience for you.“

Project

Each year, many students enrol for the workshop, and participation continues to grow. The lab will provide students with access to state-of-the-art equipment for mechanical and electronic work, including 3D printers, laser cutters, advanced workstations with CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software, and a complete electronics setup. It will introduce students to modern design and making practices aligned with industry standards, helping them tap into their engineering potential and inspiring them to develop innovative solutions to real-world problems.

Project

Given the scale of the project, which included desilting and removing water hyacinths from the lake environs, it was planned in two phases. The first phase focused on developing the area behind the Convocation Hall lawns into Kshitij Udyan, a landscaped garden with a Nature Trail winding through the trees.

The second phase involved coordinating with the municipal agency MCGB to carry out the desilting and cleaning of the lake area. While the involvement of a municipal body added complexity to the project, determined members from the Class of 1980 took it upon themselves to see the vision through. What began as a plan to simply provide project management support and select the right architects soon evolved into a hands-on effort, with the Class of 1980 deciding to manage the entire project independently to ensure its timely completion.

Their dedication paid off. Kshitij Udyan was inaugurated in 2008, marking the successful completion of the first phase. The remaining activities followed shortly thereafter, bringing the ambitious revitalization project to a meaningful close.

Project

This alumni-led, alumni-built, and alumni-delivered world-class hostel complex, supported by corporates and well-wishers, provides students with modern living spaces that enhance their campus experience. Three state-of-the-art hostels, H7, H8, and H21 (a dedicated women’s hostel), now add 848 hostel rooms with 1127 beds. Operational since July 2025, the hostels are home to students who are living, learning, debating, dreaming, and forming friendships that will last a lifetime.
