IIT Bombay is delighted to spotlight the exceptional work of its faculty – Prof. Raghu Murtugudde (Climate Studies Department) and Prof. Subimal Ghosh (Department of Civil Engineering and Convener of the Interdisciplinary Program in Climate Studies) who recently led the development of a cutting-edge web portal and mobile app for monitoring extreme rainfall in Mumbai. Their expertise and dedication have been instrumental in bringing this vital tool to life.

This innovative project, which received funding support from HDFC ERGO through the HE-IITB Innovation Centre, involved students and staff from the Climate Studies program as well as undergraduate students from Civil Engineering.

The web portal, accessible at mumbaiflood.in, and the Android app, available at Google Play, were launched for public use and were developed in collaboration with the MCGM Centre for Municipal Capacity Building and Research (MCMCR).

The web portal and app feature several key functions:

Rainfall Forecasts: Providing predictions for the next three days based on a downscaling model developed by Climate Studies students.

– Rainfall Forecasts for Upcoming Three Days: The forecast is based on a downscaling model developed by Climate Studies students.

– Water Level Measurements: Displaying data from sensors at critical locations, including the Mithi River and Vakola Nala.

– Crowd-Sourced Information: Allowing citizens to contribute real-time updates on current conditions.

– Real-Time Rainfall Data: Offering local station data on the web portal.

– Recent Tweets: Showcasing tweets related to Mumbai rainfall and flooding on the web portal.

Prof. Subimal Ghosh expressed hope that the portal and app would be highly beneficial for the residents of Mumbai.

This initiative highlights the innovative spirit and commitment of IIT Bombay’s faculty.
